    Children and Young People

    Children and young people can sometimes be affected by domestic violence and abuse whether they see it or not. It can be hard for children and young people to voice their troubles and concerns and have someone listen to them.

    We have health visitors who come to the refuge and work with new parents and young children and have strong contacts with local schools so if children come into the refuge, their education suffers as little disruption as possible.

    Children and young people are offered;
    • older children with one to one support
    • play sessions and crèches
    • special support for the first few days of a child’s arrival at the refuge
    • play schemes, including planned day trips out during holiday time
    • offering practical support to women with children about health, behaviour, education and emotional issues
    • accompanying and supporting women with children at appointments with other agencies, like schools or solicitors.
    SWA have a ‘no smacking’ policy within the refuge, and will happily help parents to find other solutions to behavioural issues.
