What is domestic violence and abuse?
There are many definitions of domestic violence and definitions for domestic abuse.
Here at SWA, we say it’s:
If you, or someone you know, are being forced to do anything against your will, abused, threatened, physically or sexually assaulted by a partner, former partner or a family member, that is domestic violence.
Domestic violence and abuse is about power and control, it can include;
Domestic violence and abuse is very common, statistically 1 in 4 women will experience it in their lifetime. Women who experience this are not from one section of society: anyone, regardless of age, ethnicity or social class, can experience domestic violence or abuse.

- being afraid of a current or former partner or family member, or to express your true opinions in front of them
- having belongings destroyed
- being prevented from seeing family or friends
- threatening or harming pets
- living with jealous and possessive behaviour and feeling isolated
- being humiliated or verbally abused
- being financially abused ; having money taken from you, not given enough to live on..
