    BME Outreach

    BME stands for Black and Minority Ethnic, which sounds strange, and at SWA we are very aware of the need to try to use the most appropriate teminology possible. However, at the moment we are stuck with BME, but we are looking at changing this.

    What we mean when we talk about BME groups are those that are often discriminated against or overlooked in our communities, and because of this discrimination, may find it hard to access appropriate services.

    BME groups can include;
    • Asian women
    • African women
    • Traveller women
    • Women from refugee communites
    We also recognise that language can present a big hurdle to getting help  and support. We have staff who can provide support in English, Punjabi and Urdu. A free interpreting service is available through Stockport Council’s Ethnic Diversity Service - they can be contacted on 0161 477 9000 or emailed on eds.admin@stockport.gov.uk

    We are constantly building links with agencies and groups that work with women from many different sections of the community, and seek to make our services as accessible as possible.
